Throughout the years Jan has also used photography as a means of political expression. Since the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas debates in the early 90’s, she has been photographing imagery that investigates our cultural understanding/misunderstanding of sexual harassment. Digital photography has allowed her to more explicitly comment on the ambiguities of this issue, as seen in her Notes from a Sexual Harassment Workshop.
Overshadowing this domestic issue recently has been Jan’s horror and disillusionment over the latest war against Iraq. The War Prayers photos visually comment on this turbulent time that we find ourselves living in now. One of Jan’s War Prayers is the cover photograph of Steven Coffman’s 2004 book Peace Meal, a lucid, personal commentary on the state of the America since 9-11. |
